In one week, Activision and Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has raked in more cash than any form of entertainment for sale. It sold around 9.4 million copies of the first-person shooter game in five days and made $600 million.

Some enterprising Wikipedia contributor decided to pull together a list of the 50 films with the highest worldwide gross of the decade so far. One has to go all the way down to No. 15 on the list, Disney/Pixar’s “Finding Nemo,” before finding one created from original material — in other words, not a sequel, remake or adaptation of existing material or characters (such as Batman or Harry Potter).

YouTube has introduced a solution for media sites to moderate and post video uploads from visitors. The Huffington Post, NPR, Politico and the San Francisco Chronicle are the first media companies to use the system which is called YouTube Direct. The system allows registered YouTube users to upload videos directly to a media site. These videos are also seen on the member’s personal YouTube channel.

Sony now claims 2012 “exceeded our estimates” yesterday by over $5 million worldwide. So Roland Emmerich’s disaster pic did $165.2 million overseas and $65.2 million domestically for a new worldwide total of $230.4 million. That helped Sony Pictures set a new studio record for international box office with $1.634 billion for 2009, and counting, that broke the 2006 previous record.

The number of U.S. households with broadband access that watched full-length movies and TV shows online doubled in the past year, according to research firm, Parks Associates. According to the firm, 45 million households regularly watch either TV shows or films via the Internet.

Big Champagne CEO Eric Garland, whose company tracks traffic on peer-to-peer sites–where most illegal file sharing occurs–told me recently that consumers are heading online for video entertainment and he doesn’t expect them to return to their traditional viewing habits ever again. Garland’s data shows that Hulu is the first legal Web service to snatch market share away from the pirate sites.
